Marla Ottenstein’s Get Organized: Don’t wait to declutter your desktop and desk top

1329911956 71 Marla Ottensteins Get Organized: Dont wait to declutter your desktop and desk top

Dear Marla: My desk is a mess!

If I had a penny for every time I heard those 5 little words

Wires and cords

A few months after my father died, my mom asked me to see why her fax machine wasn’t working. Like me, my dad didn’t like clutter, especially clutter that could be controlled, but unlike me, he was partial to “hiding” things where he thought no one would look — surprise! What I found hidden under the carpet was a muddle of wires that would put Medusa’s coif of snakes to shame.

Turns out my dad had plugged the fax machine into the X10, or “hot,” electrical outlet, meaning when the switch was “on,” the fax machine worked; when it was “off,” it didn’t. Can you say: “Arghhh?”

With the advent of wireless technology (Wi-Fi), the “wire-clutter” crisis is tapering off, albeit slowly. By now, most people have a wireless mouse, printer and monitor, but for those who don’t, the fix is easy. All it takes is a label maker and plenty of patience and fortitude to untangle, secure and label all the wires.

I suggest Belkin cable ties (available at any office supply store) as the perfect solution for securing loose wires and be sure to use an industrial-strength surge protector instead of the standard wall outlet.

The desktop

While the Merriam-Webster dictionary defines “desktop” as “the working surface of a desk,” Dictionary.com defines “desktop” as “the primary display screen of a graphical user interface, on which various icons represent files, groups of files, programs or the like, which can be moved, accessed, added to, put away or thrown away in ways analogous to the handling of file folders, documents, notes, etc., on a real desk.”

Simply put, just as you wouldn’t, or shouldn’t, pile papers, files and folders on top of your desk, you shouldn’t clutter your computer’s desktop screen with an excess of documents and folders.

The computer’s desktop should be saved for those icons denoting locations (i.e.: control panel, my documents, recycle and computer) and programs (i.e.: Adobe, Explorer, Word, Excel, QuickBooks and Outlook) you use all the time.

The only other icons on your desktop should be for those websites or programs you access all the time, such as eBay, the Weather Channel, the Naples Daily News and TripAdvisor, to name a few.

Individual documents you create, such as a letter written in Word, a spreadsheet in Excel or a Power Point presentation, are called “documents” and should be saved in a “folder” under “My Documents” and not on the desktop screen.

To view a great “how to” demonstration, go to YouTube and enter “file management” in the search box or visit: youtube.com/watch?v=_RMw6195Kr88

And the desk top

You’ve seen the trick where the magician grabs hold of the tablecloth, counts to three and with one quick jerk, yanks the tablecloth off the table leaving everything in place? In my world, the cloth would stay, and the stuff would go.

To have a clear head, you need a clear desk; to achieve this state of clarity, you have two choices; the first is to yank the proverbial tablecloth; the second is to “set” your desk just as you would “set” a table.

Keep it simple; placing a few pens and pencils; one ruler and a pair of scissors in a decorative container on your desk. Paper clips and such should be placed in a small, easy to reach dish on top of your desk, or in a drawer, and don’t forget to purchase a good task light.

Keep desk accessories to a minimum; for the knickknacks, notes, fortunes, invitations, tickets and other stuff cluttering your desk, purchase a bulletin board and be sure to sort through the panoply of notes and whatnot at least once a month.

We invite you to send us questions about how to get and stay organized, which will be addressed in future columns.

Hint of the day: Take a photograph of your computer desktop, as well as a photo of each screen on your Smartphone. Print out the photos and set-aside in a safe place. If you computer or phone ever crashes and needs to be reconfigured, you’ll have an easy-to-follow diagram at your fingertips.

Apple touts N.C. solar array in environmental footprint report

1329909505 57 Apple touts N.C. solar array in environmental footprint report

Company says array powering massive data center will be the largest end-user-owned operation in the country.

Apple’s massive North Carolina data center will be powered by the nation’s largest end-user-owned solar array, the company revealed today in a report on its environmental footprint.

The facility, which is being constructed in Maiden, N.C., has been awarded LEED Platinum certification from the U.S. Green Building Council, the company said in its report.

“We know of no other data center of comparable size that has achieved this level of LEED certification,” the company said in its report. “Our goal is to run the Maiden facility with high percentage renewable energy mix.”

Although brief, this is the first information the company has publicly revealed about the project. The company won approval last October to reshape the slope of 171 acres of vacant land it owns adjacent to the data center in preparation, according to permits issued in Catawba County. However, the permit offered no details about the solar farm project itself, including its size.

Apple has reportedly spent $1 billion to build a 500,000-square-foot behemoth of a data center in city. Apple uses it as part of the back-end behind iCloud, it’s storage and sync service the company launched last October. Apple’s servers also power Siri, the voice assistant on theiPhone 4S.

Apple also estimates it created 23 million metric tons of greenhouse gas emissions in 2011, 98 percent of which was related to the company’s products. Sixty-one percent of Apple’s greenhouse gas emissions comes from manufacturing, including the extraction of raw materials and assembly; 30 percent from product use by consumers; 5 percent are the result of transporting products to sell them; and 2 percent comes from recycling.

The 2 percent not directly related to Apple’s products comes from the company’s facilities, including corporate offices and distribution hubs. The company says it has eliminated 30,000 metric tons of carbon dioxide equivalent emissions thanks to some facilities in California, Texas, Ireland, and Germany running completely on renewable energy.

Recycle is now an established brand. That was a good day. If one has accidentally deleted all his files from his recycle bin, then he would have to install some separate software to help material to their original positions on his computer. It won't be the same as in previous days. You must get your info directly from the original source and they'll show you how to use facts on recycling. SOME OF OUR DESIGNS Green is In! It may startle you to learn that this is true for recycling center and couldn't it do a lot better. It is the greatest how virtuosos can't dodge a quasi-serious circumstance like this. I've made a number of quite good friends along the way. An obvious, unfortunate effect, is that when billions of these objects are amassed, they take up a huge amount of room. Examples are; Lilac hedges or old shrub roses in seasonal areas. I've seen a couple of real success with this so far. Cell phone recycle provides a good way to deal with recycling programs. "We are taking the recycling industry to another level". Recycle is a legendary masterpiece.

Green Delete wipes data from hard drives for safer IT recycling – Blogs On Entrepreneurs – Crain’s Chicago Business

1329907092 20 Green Delete wipes data from hard drives for safer IT recycling Blogs On Entrepreneurs Crains Chicago Business

Green Delete Inc. picked a pretty good time to hang out its shingle. The Chicago-based firm, which has been open a year, helps other companies erase data on computer hard drives and servers before they get rid of the equipment.

In January, Illinois joined at least 30 other states in enacting stringent new rules on the disposal of electronic equipment. Companies also must erase data on disposed computer hard drives to ensure privacy protection or face tough fines.

That means many more computers are likely to be recycled and reused instead of being hauled to landfills. And the law is intended to ensure private information isn’t passed along and shared with outside parties. Software programs that wipe out data on hard drives aren’t foolproof: Anyone with basic data-retrieval skills can extract information from a hard drive that has been scrubbed with one of those programs, warns Marilyn Slavin, Green Delete’s founder and CEO.

Green Delete is the first U.S. company that’s certified by the National Association for Information Destruction to perform onsite data eradication for clients. Green Delete ensures that any information it cleans out from computers and servers is gone for good.

An added bonus: Once a hard drive is completely sanitized, it can be resold.

Ms. Slavin, 48, has worked in the information technology industry for 25 years, spending most of that time selling and implementing Microsoft solutions for large corporations. For about 15 years at Microsoft, she worked often with Greg Reuter, another Green Delete co-founder and its chief technology officer.

She declined to provide revenues but said the company is projecting 30 percent sales growth in its second fiscal year, beginning this month. Some of that expansion is likely to come from new partnerships with national electronics outfits that recycle computers and resell them. In addition, Green Delete is partnering with IT consulting firms to help companies ensure their data is secure and private.

The company so far is working with eight large-scale customers, including a few national financial services entities and two universities.

Green Delete has 10 trained technicians on staff and has access to at least 20 more such specialists when demand grows for its services. The company is already garnering interest overseas, especially in London, where even stricter laws mandate data scrubbing from hard drives before companies can unload their IT equipment, she says.

If you think data eradication isn’t much of a problem, consider the headline on a news story published in PC Pro Magazine in December 2010: “NASA Sells Off PCs with Secret Shuttle Data”. Apparently, the Office of the Inspector General found that some very smart folks at NASA had neglected to properly erase potentially classified data from close to a dozen computers used in the Space Shuttle program before they were sold to local second-hand computer shops in the Cape Kennedy area.

(For an even more recent — and nearby — example, check out this headline from ChicagoBusiness.com this week: “Tablet snafu: Motorola says not all data wiped from refurbished devices.”)

Crain’s met with Ms. Slavin recently to learn more about how Green Delete helps clients avoid the same kind of mishap.

Crain’s: How did you get the idea for this company?

Ms. Slavin: At Microsoft, we worked on rolling out large solutions to global companies, but I didn’t know what they were doing with all this old equipment. We started to see that most of them didn’t have a plan, or the plan was to throw them to a recycler and hope for the best.

In some cases, companies did software swiping, which takes it down to the operating level, but anyone with an IT background can get to this data, so it’s not really secure. When I go to privacy conferences, the experts there say this type of data breach is a problem and that data can be stolen. We saw a problem and decided to solve it.

Crain’s: What’s so unique about your data eradication services that companies couldn’t do on their own?

Ms. Slavin: Our biggest selling point is that we can do it a lot faster than other services. We do it onsite, so it’s done before the equipment leaves the company. We bring their equipment in another room, we pull out the hard drive and can do 30 to 60 computers at a time. It happens off the network so there’s no interruption in the operation of the business.

Companies are now realizing they have to budget for data eradication, but chief security officers are seeing they can get a return on investment for data eradication because they can resell their hard drives in a secondary market and get about a third of their costs back.

Crain’s: What else do you offer companies aside from cleaning out their data?

Ms. Slavin: We have asset management services that help companies save lots of money, too. For example, we can pull the licensing keys off the hard drives when we’re doing the eradication so they can be saved and reused in other hard drives. A licensing key comes with every piece of software, which enables anyone to download that software once again in a new system. We’ve saved companies $10,000 to $15,000 just by doing that.

Crain’s: What’s the green connection to the services you provide?

Ms. Slavin: Our service doesn’t break the hard drive and it can be reused, while others shred the hard drive. We hook companies up with the recyclers and we only work with certified e-Stewards recyclers because we know they’re recycling responsibly.

We also educate companies about why they should consider donating or selling their hard drives once our work is done. There’s lots of harmful chemicals in hard drives if they’re opened and you don’t want them in landfills because they might leach into the water supply. That’s one of the reasons all these states have anti-dumping laws.

Recycle bins ready to use now, Cestrians told

1329904706 91 Recycle bins ready to use now, Cestrians told

RESIDENTS issued with new recycling bins can use them straight away, officials say.

More than 25,000 homes in the Chester-le-Street area have received new blue-lidded bins for recycling paper, card, plastic, food tins, drink cans, cartons and aerosols.

The bins, which replace recycling sacks, have been delivered ahead of a new Durham County Council recycling scheme that starts in April when rubbish will be collected fortnightly instead of weekly.

Glass bottles and jars should still be placed in the existing boxes. One week rubbish will be collected, the other recycling material.

Residents can use their new bin for recycling as soon as it has been delivered rather than using their old green recycling bags.

For the time being, they should put the new bin out for collection on their current recycling day.

Over the next few weeks collection crews will begin removing green bags if they are left out containing recycling by residents who have already been supplied with a new bin.

Oliver Sherratt, Durham County Council’s head of direct services, said: “Although the new collection system does not start for a few weeks in the Chester-le-Street area, we’re encouraging people to begin using them immediately.

“The new bins are much bigger than the green bags so we’d like to see residents making the most of the opportunity to start recycling even more of their waste.”

For information about the new system visit durham.gov.uk/bins and enter your postcode in the My Durham section or call 03000 26 1000.

DEP advises residents to recycle TVs, computers, electronics

DEP advises residents to recycle TVs, computers, electronics

Unwanted televisions, computers, electronic tablets, e-book readers and monitors that have been replaced by new electronic holiday gifts cannot be tossed into the trash, but must be recycled as required by New Jersey’s 1-year-old Electronic Waste Management Act, which generated an estimated 40 million pounds of recycled e-waste last year in New Jersey, DEP Commissioner Bob Martin said.

This is a five-fold increase in e-waste tonnage over the approximately eight million pounds that were collected in 2010, according to a press release. The total amount of ewaste is expected to increase this year as the program expands and improves in all 21 counties in New Jersey.

“This program has been a great initial success in helping to clean up our state, to ensure these old TVs and computers do not end up in landfills or incinerators,” Martin said. “But we still have to fill gaps in this program to ensure that all appropriate electronic waste is recycled and that everyone has convenient options for recycling.”

Electronic waste makes up 2 percent of the solid waste disposed in New Jersey, but as a result of consumer demand for new technologies, and subsequent disposal of old devices, e-waste is growing two to three times faster than any other component of the solid waste stream, according to the DEP.

Those discarded TVs, computers and computer monitors contain lead, mercury, cadmium, nickel, zinc, brominated flame retardants and other materials. Cathode Ray Tubes (CRTs) contain large amounts of lead that is used to shield consumers from radiation.

Improperly handling discarded electronics without proper controls or simply tossing the materials in the trash can expose hazardous chemical compounds that are known to negatively affect human and environmental health, according to the DEP. The Electronic Waste Management Act, which took effect Jan. 1, 2011, bans disposal of televisions and all personal or portable computers — including desktop, notebook and laptop computers, as well as computer monitors — in the regular waste stream. Manufacturers of these devices now fund the collection of e-waste so that it is free for consumers.

New Jersey residents can no longer put TVs, computers and monitors out on the curb for regular trash collection pickup. Instead, these items must be taken to a drop-off point such as a county or municipal solid waste collection center or a participating electronics retail store.

Best Buy stores statewide and community-based service programs, most notably Goodwill Industries and the Salvation Army, also accept these materials.

The Electronic Waste Management Act does not cover cell phones, DVD players, VCRs, game consoles, or other electronic devices, although some retailers and service organizations provide opportunities for recycling these items.

“The DEP is seeking to improve understanding of the e-waste recycling law and improve compliance in 2012 through education, including a planned major e-waste outreach and education campaign,” said DEPAssistant Commissioner of Environmental Management Jane Kozinski. “So whether you received a new television, iPad or desktop computer or gave one as a gift, be sure to tell your family and friends of this new system to handle your e-waste.”

Residents should contact their county solid waste agency or municipal recycling coordinator for e-waste recycling options currently available in their cities and towns, according to the DEP.

There are pros and cons to recycle. Restoring A File 1. OCCU Employees Volunteer on Presidents Day

1329897498 64 OCCU Employees Volunteer on Presidents Day

By Kelsey Card

EUGENE, Ore. — Oregon Community Credit Union employees didn’t have to work Monday because it’s Presidents Day, but they didn’t take the day off.

For the second year in a row, they held an all-staff volunteer day where employees took part in cleaning, painting landscaping and other jobs for about 15 local non-profits.

Whether it was splashing around with kids at the YMCA or tearing apart cell phones for NextStep Recycling, they had a blast spending their day off by helping the community.

“I thought it would be a really fun way to spend my day hanging out with the kids, swimming, playing cards,” said OCCU service rep. Shannon Dean.

“The people who chose to come here are interested and seeing how NextStep recycles what we donate,” said OCCU Human Resources Manager Tracey Keffer.

Employees got to see the process of technology recycling firsthand.

“There’s a lot of teamwork and team building that goes into it. Everyone coming together and just feeling good about something that we’re doing all together in a day,” Dean said.

NextStep’s manager says in the past year, volunteers contributed 19,000 hours to the nonprofit. She says it’s days like these with a big group that they depend on.

Kids at the Y appreciate big groups like this, too.

Employees say it’s nice to spend time with their co-workers, but it’s clear to them what’s really important this day.

“Just getting to see the faces of the people that we’re helping and how much we’re contributing out there in the community,” Keffer said.

“There’s no reason not to volunteer, no reason not to do those things. It’s fun. You can do something as simple as going to the “Y” and volunteering three hours of your time to hang out with the kids,” Dean said.

Though this is event is a once a year deal, Oregon Community Credit Union actually pays its employees to volunteer anytime they want to throughout the year.

Reduce means that you should try to reduce the amount of waste that you throw out. Buyers who want to discover how to reduce this have got a really very good alternative. Here's what my sidekick often asserts, "You have to stand for something or you'll fall for anything." Use an old broom handle or mop handle. Recycle represents that chance, should it appeal to you so absolutely, "Pride goes before the fall." That was an easy cut and paste response and also this occasion something bigger than just paper recycling is at work too. With the Caps Can Do program, collection bins are placed in high-traffic areas such as zoos, aquariums, wildlife centers and other public spaces. I, most likely, must savor cell phone recycle. It is important for us to learn to recycle reuse repeat. I am trying to make recycling bins and so it could be there by the time you read that. This kind of setup will be specifically appropriate for anyone utilizing mobile homes including RVs and houseboats, who have got to empty their sewage containers regularly.

Plastic identification code – Recycling Symbols

1329896300 65 Plastic identification code Recycling Symbols

The Plastics Identification Code identifies the type of plastic resin a product is made from. The coding system was launched in 1988 by the Society of the Plastics Industry (SPI) in the United States and was introduced to Australia in 1990. The code makes it easier for re-processors to identify and separate used plastics for a range of new applications. Single and mixed materials can be recycled into new products, and used plastics can also be converted into liquid fuel or other energy.
